| Description: | The first record I have of Henry James is his marriage certificate: age 41 (dob 1836) bachelor, married Rebecca Hill (widow, nee Newman) 8th Oct 1877 Kimbolton, St Neots district, Huntingdonshire. States he is a painter, born Island of Jura, father William Clement James, excise officer. The Customs and Excise Department have no records of him. Nor is there any record of him on the island of Jura. They tell me they do not keep records of temporary appointments.
1881 census aged 45, a painter living in Buckden, Hunts.(dob 1836)
1891 census aged 55, painter living in Kimbolton, St Neots, Hunts.(dob 1936)
1901 census, aged 70 (dob 1831), living in Kimbolton.
Death: 11th March 1905 aged 74 (dob 1831), plumber and master painter.
My mother used to tell me her grandfather was Scottish and had a Spanish mother.
I have found a William C. James, artist, in the 1841 (Islington West), 1851 (Lambeth), and 1861 (Lambeth) censuses, born 1814 Chelsea died Dec QR 1865 Lambeth, with wife Ludovina Gabriella Collins born 1816 Evora, variously Spain/Portugal died Dec QR 1899 Lambeth, BUT there is never a Henry James with them. They married 26 May 1825, Old Church, St Pancras.They are listed with 2 children : Alfred abt 1837 (is he Henry??) and William 1839, both born St Pancras. In the 1841 census there is a Superintendant of Excise living further down the street: did he give William a temporary post as an excise officer in Jura?
Rebecca, before she married her first husband, was employed as a domestic servant in Lambeth.
I would like to find his true birthdate, and his parents. |
