| Description: | I am searching for death and cemetery information for my great-great grandparents. I have detailed census and city directory information as well as church records from St. Mary's church in Albany of everything up to, but not including the death and burial information.
I am searching for the final pieces of the puzzle consisting of:
*) Death dates & records (if any)
*) Burial information
*) Plot location(s) and pictures
Additional info posted on: 2010-02-14 21:26 All the information I have about my gggrandparents (Jeremiah and Catherine) is below.
Jeremiah O’Brien (born 1820/1821) & Catharine Jordon-O’Brien (born 1823-1826)
Jeremiah and Catharine were the first generation of the O’Brien line in the United States. Both were born in Ireland, Jeremiah around 1820/21 and Catharine around 1824/25, but it isn’t clear when they came over to the US or whether they came over together. According to the 1855 NY Census, Jeremiah came to Albany in 1851 and Catherine came to Albany in 1852.
They were married June 7th, 1853 at St. Mary’s Church in Albany. This church is still in existence and appears to have played a big part in the life of the family. At least 3 of their children were baptized there and one son, William R. O’Brien, became a cantor at the church.
Together they had 5 children:
Eliza O’Brien
Born: 1853/1854
Elizabeth O’Brien
Born: 1854/1855
Catherine O’Brien
Born: July 8, 1857
Mary O’Brien
Born: September 5, 1859
Died: April 8, 1929
William R. O’Brien
Born: March 19, 1861
Died: January 20, 1942
The family appears to have lived mostly in downtown Albany in a series of tenements on Canal Street. For the period from 1855-1858 they lived at 53 Canal Street, in 1859 at 52 Canal Street, 1860 at 51 Canal Street and 1861 through 1871 they lived at the same address, 75 Canal Street. It is assumed they lived in the same area before the City directory listed them in the 1853-1855 timeframe.
Jeremiah is listed as a laborer in all the records found. But, exactly what type of labor or trade he did isn’t known. The 1855 census lists him as not being able to read or write but the 1860 census does not note this. It does not appear that he served in the civil war since the 1865 NY Census shows him at the expected address and the extra information that was gathered from Civil War veterans did not note anything for him. In general, it appears he would have been over 40 at the time of the war so it is no surprise that he didn’t serve in the military.
According to his marriage record, he also may have used the name “Darby” and he used the name Jerry on several Baptism certificates of his children. He appears to have died in 1868 or 1869 in Albany. He was about 47 years old but his burial location and exact age are not known. The largest Catholic cemetery in Albany with burials at the time, St. Agnes, has no record of him.
Catharine O’Brien ’s maiden name was Jordon (sometimes it was written Jorden). After Jeremiah died in 1868/9 she continued to live at the same address and raise the children. Her occupation is listed as “house keeper” in 1870. It isn’t clear when she died or where she is buried. She appears in the 1875 NY state census with most of her children at 48 Canal Street but it isn’t clear what happens after that year. She disappears from the city directory from that address but other widowed Catherine O’Briens show up in various places into the 1880s. She may have died around 1880. This is when her youngest child, William Robert, starts appearing on his own in the Albany city directory.
