| Description: | The 1964 obituary of my great-grandfather (attached) states that he is survived by, among others, "a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Ziff of New York City, N.Y." No living member of my family knows much about Mrs. Ziff.
Gertrude Ziff was present at my parents' wedding in 1957. There are no known contacts after that date, but apparently she was alive in 1964. My mother recalls that she had a son named Fred, and perhaps a daughter, but she is not sure. She was known to family as "Aunt Gittle," the Jewish equivalent of Gertrude.
I believe that Gittle lived in New York for many years. A distant cousin of mine says she came to stay with Gittle as a child in the 1920s or 1930s. That cousin, as you might imagine, is quite elderly now, and it is hard to get an exact date from her.
Some of my relatives think that Gertrude Ziff earlier had the surname Lichtenstein. They are not sure where they got that information.
My great-grandfather's surname was Shepherd, and that (or something like it) was Gertrude Ziff's maiden name. In Eastern Europe, where they came from, their surname was "Shapiro" or some variant of that.
My great-grandfather came to Canada in 1901. I do not know when Gertrude Ziff came to the United States. I do not know if she was older or younger than my great-grandfather. I do not know when she died, except that it was after 1964.
I have searched the public databases available on ancestry.com. I have found no obvious matches for a Gertrude/Gittle Ziff/Lichtenstein. There are, of course, many somewhat similar names, as these are quite common Jewish names.
I would be grateful to find any/all of the following:
1) Gertrude Ziff's death certificate
2) Names and relevant dates for her children
3) Her living descendants, if any
4) Circumstances of her arrival in the United States |
